DENTURES

ABOUT THIS TREATMENT

Dentures are removable dental appliances which replace missing teeth. A partial denture can be used to replace one or more missing teeth in the upper or lower jaw, using the remaining teeth for support. A complete denture can be fitted in cases where all teeth have been lost.

They are a simple and cost-effective way to replace missing teeth, particularly in cases unsuitable for bridges. Cosmetically, a good quality denture can closely match the appearance of natural teeth, and of course can be shaped and colour-matched to achieve the optimum results.

Dentures consist of artificial teeth set in a flesh-coloured base. The main types of denture available are all-acrylic and cobalt-chromium. The latter has an acrylic surface with an underlying metal frame, which makes it thinner and stronger.

Further Information

As dentures are not fixed in place, they do require removal daily for cleaning. Although partial dentures are usually supported by metal clasps around remaining teeth, they will move slightly while chewing.

Replacing missing teeth has several benefits, besides the obvious cosmetic improvement for visible teeth. It helps avoid movement (or drifting) of remaining teeth into the gap, resulting in misalignment. As the teeth provide support for facial tissues and muscles, missing teeth can also result in changes to facial appearance.

Modern dentures can be much easier to wear and better in appearance than those you may have seen years ago! If you would like to consider a denture to replace missing teeth, or your current denture is uncomfortable or worn, please call to book a consultation.
